MAY 22, 2007 - CBIN RECEIVES GRANT TO STUDY HYDROGEN AS ALTERNATIVE FUEL
CBIN faculty members Trevor Douglas, John Peters, and Mark Young recently received a grant from the US Department of Energy to study the conversion of solar energy into hydrogen, a possible fuel source. The award of almost $1,000,000 to MSU is to pursue the synthesis of materials with advanced light harvesting and catalytic properties and builds upon the expertise of these CBIN researchers in understanding how nature already does this. MSU was one of 27 projects funded nationally. Read more.
MAY 14, 2007 - CBIN PART OF $6 MILLION NASA AWARD TO STUDY ORIGIN OF LIFE
MSU recently received a $6 million award from NASA to become one of the four newest Astrobiology Research Institutes. The focus of the award at MSU is on the origin of life and involves the research being conducted by CBIN professors, specifically that of Mark Young, Robert Szilagyi, and Trevor Douglas. CBIN faculty memebr Dr. John Peters is PI on the grant. Read more.
MAY 11, 2007 - CBIN PROFESSOR RECEIVES AWARD
Dr. Yves Idzerda, CBIN Associate Director and professor in Physics, received the Cox Family Award at MSU for Creative Scholarship and Teaching. Dr. Idzerda will receive a $2,000 honorarium from the Winston and Helen Cox Family Endowment, as well as an $800 stipend to buy books dedicated in his honor at MSU's Renne Library. Read more.
APRIL 28, 2007 - CBIN RESEARCHER FEATURED SPEAKER
Dr. Yves Idzerda gave the community lecture and keynote speech at Montana Tech's eleventh annual Undergradute Research Science Fair on April 28. Dr. Idzerda's talk "What's All This Fuss About Nanotechnology?" addressed the topic of nanotechnology and described research being conducted by faculty in the Center for Bio-Inspired Nanomaterials. APRIL 21, 2007 - SCIENCE SATURDAY AT THE LIBRARY FEATURES VIRUSES
On Saturday, April 21, 20 school age children at the Bozeman Public Library learned about viruses and how
scientists study them from CBIN faculty members Trevor Douglas and Brian Bothner. Students had the chance to learn about virus structure, where interesting viruses are found, construct virus models, and take a virus home to share with their friends.
MARCH 29, 2007 - CBIN UNDERGRADUATE MSU'S LATEST GOLDWATER RECIPIENT
Luke Oltrogge, a Chemistry major working in the lab of Professor Trevor Douglas and Mark Young received a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship. Luke is a junior from Absarokee, Montana and is the 47th MSU student to receive the award which recognizes promise for a career in science or engineering. Read More
MARCH 22, 2007 - MONTDIEGO MEETING CONVENED AT MSU
CBIN co-sponsored the recent MontDiego Science Meeting on the campus of Montana State University on March 22-23, 2007. This informal scientific meeting brought together researchers from the Scripps Research Institute and Montana State University for two days of meetings and presentations on current research and future collaborations.
JAN. 2007 - CBIN RESEARCHERS FEATURED IN PBS SCIENCE PROGRAM
CBIN Scientists Drs. Trevor Douglas and Mark Young were recently featured in a television pilot for a new PBS series, Wired Science. The pilot, which aired nationally on PBS on January 3, 2007, highlights research on thermophilic novel viruses from Yellowstone National Park thermal environments. This project emphasizes the importance of collaborative work, demonstrates the connection between basic and applied science, and the technological advances made possible by their research.
